Buena Vista, Day 8

We are going to be spending the day geocaching around the area.

At one of our first caches we meet two retired teachers from Pennsylvania, at Cottonwood Lake.

Dave and Ruthie, work as camp hosts at campgrounds in exchange for a free place to stay.

DSC_1105

Not a bad deal, and look at the view they wake up to every morning!

DSC_1104

Dave and Ruthie said that in the mornings, and late evenings just before dark they have been seeing big horn sheep on the mountain cliffs.

DSC_1112

We didn’t see any any sheep but we did spot a few deer.

Not being in a rush to move on, we spend some time at the lake just enjoying the quietness and sweet smelling air.

DSC_1106

There is a fish in the lake taunting John. He is trying to get a good picture of it jumping out of the water. He did manage to get a good picture of a splash.

DSC_1108

There is this quaint little town called Fair Play that we are meandering our way toward.

DSC_1110

The landscape we are driving through is just breathtaking.

DSC_1111

Fair Play looks like something out of a cartoon. There is a part of the town that is walled off by a high fence and it looks like you have to pay to go through the gates.

DSC_1114

We visit a real estate office and learn that the cartoon South Park is modeled after the town of Fair Play, right down to the mayor.  Who knew?

DSC_1119

We are starting our our first geocaching travel bug and have decided to do so in this park outside of Buena Vista, called The Four Mile.

DSC_1121

We have spent hours 4-wheeling around the park and just having fun.  There are massive rock formations that are calling to us “come climb me”.

DSC_1124

So much for the great rock climbers.

DSC_1126

I have twisted my knee and it hurts a lot.

DSC_1127

I’m wondering how will I get down from here.

DSC_1123

It is amazing how big the rocks are once you walk up close to them.  I love the terrain and vegetation in this part of the the country.

DSC_1128

We are hiking to another cache that is close by the Four Mile trail and I have to say it is my favorite place we’ve been so far.

DSC_1137

Cool! A tunnels through the rock.

DSC_1134

I think it is the combination of the terrain, the vegetation and the sky that make this area so beautiful to me.

DSC_1116

it is getting late so it is back to the hotel to clean up and go for dinner.

DSC_1139

Hmm. We wonder if this was a cabin from long ago or something else.

DSC_1129

This town is comfortable, and the atmosphere is very inviting.

DSC_1139

It is taking us a while to pick a restaurant.

DSC_1141

There is a Mexican place up the street, I guess we are going in.
