There are only three trees that you can drive through in the Redwood National Forest and they are all privately owned. We are pretty sure this is going to be one of the hokey tourist trap kind of things, but we have to do it. All our lives living on the East coast we have heard about the California Redwoods so big you can drive you car through them.

And yup, driving through a tree is definitely a hokey tourist trap. The trees do not naturally form in a way you can drive through them. Well, there was one but it fell down recently. They are man-made, by carving a cutout through a tree. It only cost us $5 to do it so what the heck.

Here we go!

Does this Jeep make my trunk look fat?

No, honey you’re fine. Now, work that Jeep-tree thing.

That’s the way it’s done!

Okay, now that’s out of the way, lets go find some sea lions. From the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway we traversed yesterday we saw sea lions on the beach. They are so cute, how can you pass them up.

We take a trail that leads down to the ocean that passes by a Yurok ceremonial site.

There isn’t any indication of what kind of a ceremonies are performed here.

Along with wild roses, which actually smell like roses, the path is lined with scotch brooms.

Now that we are down on the beach we see why there are so many sea lions and sea birds here. Fish and fishermen.

Apparently, there are plenty near the shore that we don’t have the eye for but these men and animals do.

P1020592

The fisherman were doing their best to chase the sea lions and birds away. A relationship that has been around for a while I’m sure.

For us we enjoyed watching the give and take among Mother Nature.

Sea lions are pretty noisy and you could hear them calling up and down the beach.

Leaving the sea lions and the fishermen, we wander further on down the beach. I don’t know what the rest of the Pacific coast looks like but Northern California is very gray. Gray sky, gray sand, gray rocks and gray water.

P1020602

It is kind of depressing, actually.

P1020611

Oops, wait. I have to take that back. Algae on the rocks adds a bit of color.

P1020619

With some photo enhancing I can almost get the water blue-gray, but still gray.

There is a lot of driftwood on the beach and I pick up a few pieces here and there. It is pretty beat up though. I also found this big pine cone. It is not from a Redwood. I think it is from a Jeffery tree as it isn’t prickly.

Although it is cool and windy down on the beach we have had a wonderful time just strolling along the beach and enjoying nature.
