We find so many interesting spots when we get off the beaten path. Being able boondock lets us live anywhere. Okay, so living in the parking lot of Cummins wasn’t elegant, but hey, we didn’t have to get a hotel, right?
With the RV all fixed up we are on our way to our next long-term spot in Hill City, SD. We are making an overnight stop at the Red Shale campground. It appears to be a camping area abandoned, or at the very least, one that is minimally maintained, by the National Forest service.
The campground is kind of in the middle of no where, off a lightly used highway. This could explain the lack of maintenance at this campground.
Though very overgrown otherwise, the parking areas of each site are clear. There isn’t much of a yard so to speak, but hey, we are only here for an overnight.
There is plenty of room between sites, making this a very quiet campground. We kind of feel like we are all alone here.
And the best part – it’s free! Our perfect kind of overnight site. Another reason we really like boondocking.
