Downtown Roswell

Roswell, NM isn’t all about UFO’s. It was a big player in the Wild West and was used as grazing land for Texas cattle herders. But, the event that caused the town to boom  was the the discovery that the town was sitting on top of one of the largest artesian wells in the country.

This discovery lead to an agricultural explosion, the birth of a huge dairy industry and the largest mozzarella cheese processing plant in the world.

But what about the aliens??? In early July 1947 W.W. Mack Brazel came upon debris on his ranch that he couldn’t identify…was it a military cover up? was it really aliens? Who knows for sure, but the townsfolk embraced their new money generating industry, tourism.

There are gift shops, hotels (big chain ones!), Wal-Marts and soda machines that have jumped on the alien-gravy-train. Check out the Coke machine in the lower left. It is a graphic of an Alien holding a soda can.

The green alien in the bottom center of the photo….almost every store had one outside.

Street lamps

And of course a UFO Museum.

The museum had a mixture of “museum” stuff about the 1947 crash of the UFO and it had some fun stuff too.

The alien on the right side of the picture would move his head and track you as you went by. Scared me, but luckily I didn’t scream or anything. John laughed.

See!!!! I knew they found one!!!!

The 4th of July around here is pretty busy. Each year they celebrate the anniversary of the crash. Bet we could see some really interesting aliens at that festival!

Chat me up peeps! We love to hear from you.
