A discovery of Pecos diamonds in the wilds just outside of Roswell, sparked an interest in rocks and geology for John. With support and encouragement from me and some new found friends here in Deming, NM, John has found a new pass-time ā rockhounding.
Rockhounding is more than just collecting rocks. The rockhound enjoys cutting, slabbing, cabbing, and polishing their finds. Basically taking a plain old rock and turning it into something pretty.
Deming Gem & Mineral Society is a local membership group that encourages rockhounding, provides its members access to rock collecting sites, tools to cut and polish rocks, as well as jewelry making classes, photo classes and other educational workshops.
John joined as a regular member and I as sort of an auxiliary member. On Saturday, while John was cutting some of his rocks,
I attended the jewelry making class and made some earrings. Fun stuff!
John purchased a grinder/polisher machine so that after we leave he can continue working on the rocks that he had cut at the GMS club. He just spent 6 wonderful hours outside the RV polishing some of his rocks. Sweet bliss for me.
