Time to Archive

The end of the year is coming fast and I have been surfing around our website and decided that some housecleaning is in order. I’m retiring information that I have on the Odds ‘n ends page. However the information will survive in the archives so it is not really gone. There will be other entries to come as I begin moving the information.

We have had other hound owners ask us about this solution so I thought I’d post the recipe.

The Blue Power Ear Treatment (that is really purple!)

So, What is it?

John found this formula on a bloodhound forum when Sophie was just a puppy. He was fighting a losing battle against very bad, recurrent ear infections she was getting. This ear treatment has been a life savor. The solution is quite strong so I didn’t use it on the shepherd’s delicate ears. I used Opi-Clean from the vet for a ear cleaning solution for him.

This solution is NOT meant as an ear infection cure. It is a proactive, prevention treatment. Please check with your vet to make sure your dog does not have another condition causing his problem before trying to treat on your own.

All the ingredients can be found in a pharmacy or drug store and will run you about $15. This recipe made enough to last John 7 years. The Gentian Violet solution stains everything purple, so use care when applying.

INGREDIENTS:
16 Oz. bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol (standard 70%)
4 Tablespoons of Boric Acid Powder
16 Drops of Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in the alcohol bottle and shake well (it takes a while for the boric Acid Powder to dissolve completely so keep shaking)

We then pour some of the mixture in to a small squirt bottle like the kind used to color hair. Shake VERY well before using.

DIRECTIONS:
Squirt solution onto a cotton ball and/or q-tip and CAREFULLY swab the inside of the ear and canal removing any “gunk”.

If necessary the solution can be used to flush the ears, but the Gentian Violet solution stains EVERYTHING. If we need to flush her ears we use Opi-Clean. (that we purchased from our Vet for the shepherd)

Chat me up peeps! We love to hear from you.
