It was a beautiful, sunny, hot day; close to 100. Perfect for a trip down the river. After visiting my father and having some lunch, Zane, Britta, John and I loaded up the kayaks and headed out.
This trip was from the boat launch in Montoursville to the boat launch in Muncy. A ten mile trip by car, but less by river. We’ve done this trip several times before and it is one of my favorites. Lots of trees and wildlife with very few people and houses along the way. Depending on water speed and how much paddling you do it can take anywhere from 3 – 5 hours.
There is always the chance of flipping a kayak over and with new/inexperienced kayakers along for the ride, it is a waiting game to see who will be the first to flip. Zane did us the honors in about 6-10 inches of water. He was trying to get back in his kayak after having to walk through some shallow riffles. It is very important when getting in a kayak to stay in the middle and stay as low as possible. He knows that now. Unfortunately no one had a camera ready to capture the moment.
Wildlife was unusually prolific today and everyone was excited at the variety. We saw deer, a bear, a mink, frogs, a golden eagle, big fish, a couple of woodpeckers (John missed the shot) as well as a kildeer and what we think might have been a blue heorin.
It turned out to be a lovely Father’s Day.
