Founders Day Dushore, PA

Always looking for the out of the ordinary things to do, a friend of John’s suggested that we might enjoy the Outhouse races held every August in Dushore, PA.   Racing an outhouse?  We just had to experience this event.  We had no idea what to expect.

So we loaded the Jeep and headed to Dushore to check out this small town’s Founders Day celebration and Outhouse race.  We arrived in town early, found a place to park and took a stroll around town.  There are only a couple of main roads running through the downtown area, they were packed with street vendors selling their wares and local businesses open for shopping. Activities for the kids were setup in a large parking lot in the center of town. There were plenty of stands with home cooked food and BBQ’s around town as well.

Having arrived early, several hours before the keg races and Outhouse race, we decided to do some adventuring.  We found our way into some neighboring State Forest lands, located a quiet spot and hung the hammocks between the jeep and a big tree for a short nap.

After about a 45 minute nap we decided to make our way back to town.  However I ran into a little trouble trying to get out of my hammock.  As I reached up to unzip the mosquito netting I flipped over.  There I hung unable to do anything but scream at John to get me out.  John however was all but incapacitated with laughter.   Wanting to take a picture, but knowing better, he attempted to free me.  After a lot of screaming from me and pondering by John on the best way to get me out of my predicament, I was finally freed from my hammock.

We managed to get back to town, despite out constant laughing at my ordeal.  The town was a bit more crowded but still we didn’t have any trouble finding a parking space.  We met up with John’s friend at the local bar and restaurant that had roped-off a large section of sidewalk and part of the street to create an outside dining area.

We bought a BBQ and drink and noticed that the excitement at the upcoming event was building…or maybe it was just the beer.  Anyhow it wasn’t long before the parade of Outhouses was filing by.

We can honestly say we have never seen anything remotely like this anywhere.

Teams of 4 build their own non-motorized outhouses for the race.   They parade them around the course prior to the race letting every get a look at their craftsmanship.  There is only room for participants to race 2 at a time.  The team with the fastest time wins; the only prize, bragging rights for the year.

If you enjoy unique, one of a kind events, this one is well worth your time.

Chat me up peeps! We love to hear from you.
