Living Room Construction Update

Wall soon to be removed

The living room has been completely gutted now except for the flooring. This includes the “2nd roof” we found after ripping the ceiling down. John has reinforced the roof trusses which fixed the sag in the middle of the roof. From outside the house you can actually see that the roof line in the middle is straight now.

He has the whole living room studded out except for the wall where the chimney was..yes I said was. This week he tore the chimney down. We had been waiting to do this until 1) the weather got warm enough that we didn’t need heat any more, and 2) until we could afford an electric water heater. Being able to shut the furnace off has been the major hold up in construction…or is that destruction.

New Siding

With the chimney down he can now put on the new roof. He has to put the new roof on before any work in the living room can be done because the roof leaks a little in a couple of spots especially where he patched the whole where the chimney went out through. We are putting on a metal roof and the color that I want is not something that they carry in stock so it has to be ordered. John said it will be about two weeks until it arrives.

In preparation for the new roof, John and Brittany’s boyfriend Xavier removed the siding from the peak of the house and put on the new siding. The face of the porch roof needs the siding replaced as well but it is low, and there is only a very little bit. John says it won’t take him long and he won’t really need help to complete that part.

Kitchen wall

Now he says he wants to tear the wall out between the kitchen and the living room. This is something we have thrown around for a while and others have said what a good idea it would be. The problem is that it is a major outside wall of the house.

Well I came home to find the stove moved out of its place, half the counter gone, and all of the brick facing in the kitchen removed. There were concrete headers lying in my flower bed too. I guess we are tearing the wall out after all.

What a busy beaver he’s been! He is very sore and tired. The rest of the week he is just going to rest and work on “gun stuff”. I think he needs a little get away. I will see what he thinks about that.
