Our RV is our home. I’ve talked before about “living in a vehicle” and some things I’ve done to make it feel less so. When it comes right down to it, as far as the home thing goes, an RV is a rolling earthquake. Items shift and vibrate out of place. Securing these items while traveling is a necessity.
When we first started out, I put everything literally not-nailed-down, away or tucked somewhere that would keep it protected. Yeah, that was no fun. Imagine: Every 2 weeks, having to clear every flat surface in your house (knickknacks, lamps, plants, pictures….), put all of your shower stuff away and shrink your living space in half. Aaaaah!!
Then I discovered Museum Putty. It is a reusable, non-permanent putty that will not damage your wood or other surfaces while it securely holds items in place. Awesome stuff, purchased at Amazon.
The hold is strong enough that I use it on my vase (sorry you can’t see it), digital picture frame, plants…
…and lamps.
For plants that need rotated often, I bought 3” lazy Susan turntables (from Amazon of course) and secured all of it with the museum putty.
Also figurines, my candlewax warmer and more plants, of course.
Last but not least….John’s display case full of rocks.
Museum putty works really well on flat surfaces but I have not had good luck using it on vertical surfaces. Command Strip products, though expensive, are perfect for so many applications. They negate the need, for the most part, of putting nails and/or screws (holes) in the walls of the RV. Wiping down the surface with acetone or other grease cutter encourages a strong hold. TEST FIRST on an inconspicuous spot.
Using hooks and a bit of wire I hung bulkhead decorations in the living room.
Picture frames.
Clothing hooks.
Command also has wire management solutions and I use them as well.
Rubber-type material tends not to slide around and I found that my kitchen counter stuff like the coffee maker, ride just fine where they are. With that in mind I bought a caddy for my dishwashing items and it rides quite nicely on the counter. Where did I get it? Guess.
Last but not least is the shower. I did not want to keep bottles of shampoo and body wash in the shower. 1.) I hate having to move them to clean the shower. (pure laziness I know) 2.) I do not want to have to put them away each time we move. I knew I didn’t want a hanging caddy or pocket type solution because it they are a pain to keep clean. I hate to clean.
I opted for a soap dispenser. Of course I purchased from Amazon; I’m such a junkie. John followed the installation directions TO THE LETTER. Our dispenser is going on its 4th year and it is still “hanging in there”.
As a side benefit, we have noticed that we use less soap, stretching the all important “Budget”.
The point I am hoping to make is whether you are a full-timer, part-timer, or weekend warrior, your rig is your home wherever it is parked. It is possible to make it your own without constant hassle. Kind of set-it-and-forget-it decorating.
